What Is Clomiphene?

Clomiphene (Clomid) is a medication that stimulates your body’s natural testosterone production. Unlike injectable testosterone, Clomiphene works by signaling your brain to increase luteinizing hormone (LH) and follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), which then stimulate the testes to produce more testosterone naturally.

Clomiphene is commonly prescribed for men with secondary hypogonadism, borderline testosterone levels, or those wishing to preserve fertility while improving symptoms.

How It Works:

Clomiphene blocks estrogen receptors in the brain, which increases LH and FSH release from the pituitary gland. This signals your body to produce more of its own testosterone rather than replacing it with an external source.

Because it stimulates natural production, Clomiphene may help maintain sperm production and fertility in many men.

Benefits develop gradually with consistent use and appropriate monitoring.

Expected Benefits:

Patients may experience improved energy, enhanced libido, improved erectile function, better mood and motivation, improved mental clarity, and increased overall sense of well-being.

Results vary by individual and depend on baseline hormone levels, adherence, and follow-up monitoring.

When to Use:

Clomiphene should be taken exactly as prescribed by your medical provider. Dosing is typically once daily or every other day, depending on your individualized treatment plan.

Do not increase, decrease, or change your dosing schedule without provider approval.

Possible Side Effects:

Common side effects may include:
• Headaches
• Mild mood changes
• Increased energy or restlessness

Less common but possible side effects include:
• Visual disturbances (blurred vision, light sensitivity)
• Irritability or mood swings
• Elevated estradiol levels
• Breast tenderness
• Acne

Rare but serious risks include:
• Blood clots
• Significant visual changes

Side effects are often dose-dependent and may improve with adjustment.

Contact Your Provider If You Experience:

• Vision changes or light sensitivity
• Severe headaches
• Mood instability or significant irritability
• Breast swelling or tenderness
• Leg swelling
• Chest pain
• Shortness of breath
• Any symptoms that feel unusual or concerning

Seek immediate emergency care for chest pain, stroke symptoms, or signs of a severe allergic reaction.

Who Should Not Use:

Men’s Health Suite will not prescribe Clomiphene to patients with:

• Active liver disease
• History of blood clots
• Known hypersensitivity to Clomiphene
• Uncontrolled cardiovascular disease
• Hormone-sensitive malignancy

You must notify your provider if you develop new medical conditions during therapy.

Fertility Consideration:

Clomiphene is often selected for men who wish to preserve fertility. However, response varies, and ongoing monitoring is required.

Treatment Expectations:

Clomiphene is not an instant treatment. Improvements typically occur over several weeks. Regular laboratory monitoring is required to assess testosterone levels, estradiol levels, and overall response.

Results are individualized and not guaranteed.

Patient Responsibility:

• Take medication exactly as prescribed
• Do not adjust dosing without provider approval
• Complete required lab work
• Attend follow-up visits
• Report side effects promptly

Failure to comply with monitoring requirements may result in discontinuation of therapy.
